Nyan Cat animation image was created by illustrator prguitarman and was originally called Pop Tart Cat -- a cat cherry pop tart flying through space. The music came from a Japanese Vocaloid song called "Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya" by Japanese artist daniwellP. A Youtube member saraj00n posted a video combining the "Pop Tart Cat" animation and the "nyan song" and titled the video Nyan Cat -- and Nyan Cat was born!
The video was picked up by popular websites and has over one million views in its first few weeks. Due to its popularity, the video has now many remixes and spinoff, most of them with customized characters and background music.
